Overview

NOTE: Use the Project Report Template below

IN NO CASE may code or files be exchanged between students, and each student must answer the questions themselves and do their own plots, NO COPYING of any sort! Nevertheless, students are encouraged to collaborate in the lab session.

Part 1: Getting Started

• In this part, the S-parameters and Smith chart will be used to study a 3rd order 3-dB equal ripple filter
  
• See Pozar Fig 10.16 and 10.17

• Load and run as follows:
• Login to the university network using cisco anyconnect
  
• Install and run the Fastx client to login to a linux workstation such as engr-lcs3.uncc.edu
• Login data should roughly follow this format:

• Click the "+" at the top of the Fastx window (blue arrow below)

• Open a mate terminal (magenta arrow above)
• In the mate terminal, run Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS) from the dropdown menu bar (magenta arrow below)

• Download the 7zap archive (you may need to hold down the shift key while you click on the link): RFcourse2015_proj6bjtAmp_wrk.7zap
  
• If you do not have an "apps/ads" folder or directory, use the fileManager (magenta arrow below) to create an "apps" folder (blue arrow below), and then create an "ads" subfolder in "apps"

• Move the 7zap archive into your ~/apps/ads directory
• Use MenuBar::File::Unarchive (magebta arrow and circle below) to extract the 7zads archive (blue circle and arrows below)  as follows

• You should find a new folder or directory RFcourse2021filtersA_wrk created in apps/ads
• In addition, the ADS workspace should open as follows

• You should find a new directory RFcourse2015_proj6bjtAmp_wrk created in apps/ads
• Go down through the directory tree to "ampoip3," (blue arrow above) open the folder,  and double click the schematic file,  and the following schematic should appear.

• Save a snapshot of the schematic for your report.  
  
• Make sure that your plots, component values, legends, axes, and fonts are legible in your report!
• Double-click the amplifier symbol on the schematic
•  find the TOI parameter, and read the prompt at the bottom of the popup when you select TOI.  What is TOI, and what is its numerical value and units? Save this information for your report
• What is the gain in dB (S21)? Save this information for your report
• What is the noise figure in dB? Save this information for your report
• Run the simulation
• Harmonic Balance software performs nonlinear simulation that allows the observation of effects such as third-order intermodulation.
• An output showing input and output spectra should appear as follows

• Save a snapshot of the two spectra as illustrated above, but also with 3 markers added (use "marker" (black arrow above) from the menu bar)
  
• Set the three markers at :
•  1) spectral line indicated by leftmost green arrow above,
  
• 2) spectral line indicated by leftmost red arrow above, 
• 3) spectral line indicated by leftmost blue arrow above,
  
• Record the frequencies and the power levels of all 3 of these spectral components for your report
• Note the 2 frequencies (blue arrows above) of the input spectrum
• and paste the snapshot into your report.   
  
• What are the two frequencies and amplitudes of the input spectrum (blue arrows above)? 
  
• Given the same frequencies and the new amplitudes of the output spectrum, what is the gain of the amplifier from this measurement (amplitude of red arrows above compared to blue arrows above)? 
  
• What are the two frequencies and amplitudes of the third-order products in the output spectrum (green arrows at very bottom above)
  
• Given the data above, what is the measured third order output intercept point, OIP3 in dBm?  
  

• Save a copy of the schematic for your report
• Save a copy of the new plots/results for your report



• Save your new design
  
• Exit the program, File->Exit

Report

1. You must use the ReportTemplate:  Report Template
• YOU MUST HAVE CAPTIONS AND FIGURE NUMBERS TO ALL FIGURES 
  
• The required items to be included in this report are:
  
• Parameters filled out for all 4 tables in the template
• Four Figures
•  Fig. 1 showing schematic of  OIP3 simulation (similar to schematic in Fig. 07 above)
• axes MUST BE LEGIBLE
  
• Fig. 2  showing input spectrum (similar to lower plot in Fig. 08 above)
• Axes MUST BE LEGIBLE
• Fig. 3 showing output spectrum (similar to upper plot in Fig. 08 above)
• axes MUST BE LEGIBLE
• You must cite your reference (the paper) in your paper

Do not add extraneous pages or put explanations on separate pages unless specifically directed to do so. The instructor will not read extraneous pages!

Only turn in requested plots and fill in any missing parameters in Tables.
